Hey, what's happening? Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Sherman, and I grew up in Washington D.C. and P.G. County, MD listening to GoGo and going to GoGo's from the time I was a 13 year old teenager. I'm talking about back in the day when you could get into a GoGo for $5.00 and see up to 5 or 6 bands. Remember those days? Back in the day, promoters would highlight the GoGo's by calling them a Band & Show. They would last up until 5 o'clock in the morning at some places. For anyone who doesn't know why they were called Band and Shows, it was because the bands back in the day used to give a real show, with well organized and in sync steps. It was tight!

Me and my partners Terk, Danny A, Danny D, Monte, Doug & Marcus went to almost every GoGo spot you can name. We would catch the bus, hitch hike, and even walk, man were we pressed. We would go to Cherry's with the whole Southview Crew to see Essence, Class and sometimes the old Physical Wundor. (Click Here To Read More About Southview) We would sit on the floor for what seemed to be hours to wait for the next band to play. The Panorama Room, The Coliseum (It was something about that place that I loved), Anacostia Park for Malcolm X Day, where E.U. would always tear it up. The Howard - Remember the metal stumps on the floor that would trip you up, which were left after the old theater chairs had been removed?

I remember I would even ride my bike to Forestville Skating Rink from Oxon Hill, by myself, with my tape recorder to see Redds & The Boys every Friday night, you talking about pressed! I would have my tape recorder strapped to the boy bar on my bike, and would groove all the way home with that fresh tape I had just recorded. My friends thought I was crazy, but everybody wanted a copy of that fresh new tape I had the next day. I also remember trying to sneak into Oxon Hill High to see Essence and none of us had any money. About 12 or 15 of us tried to lift one of those bike racks up to the Gym window out back, which was about 2 stories up. Little did we know how heavy that thing was. We got that thing up in the air and couldn't get it any further, so everybody just dropped it when we heard P.G. (The Police) coming. We ran through the woods and got all cut up and scarred. By the way, we gave up getting in and went back to groove to Essence from the back window.

We used to hit The Paragon II to see Trouble on Wednesday nights, man was that a hump from S.E. on the bus. I remember thinking we were in another city after that first ride there, but we kept going back. Crystal Skate, Evans Grill and Triples. The Friendly Annex, which would pretty much be S.E., Oxon Hill and Fort Washington. We would go down to the Ball Diamond in Charles County to see Benny and the Masters. We were fortunate enough to be at Highland to see Essence play for free. We would hit Southeast Gardens, which was really in Oxon Hill, Columbia Park to see Trouble again, the Cap Center to see all the honies from all over. The Chapter III, Eastside, Rythms, and I can't forget about the RSVP, at Waterside Mall in S.W. The Metro Club to see Essence every Thursday night. Wilmers Park, where we got stranded and never went again. Mrs. Mack (Rare Essence's Manager at the time) gave us a ride home, after we stopped yelling and cursing at one another. Each one of us blaming the other for not having a ride home. Man was it dark out there after they turned those lights out. We even hit spots in VA, like Alexandria Skating Rink to see Ovation and some other band, which had to be the worst band I had ever seen. We used to go down to Jimmy's Lounge and Cross Creek to see Prophecy, which was about a 2 hour ride, but we were driving by then. We would also go out to King George VA to support Doc and the Physical Wundor crew. That's enough for now!

I wanna say Peace and Love to everybody that ever was born, raised, played, hustled or struggled in Arthur Capper Projects BKA "Cappers" 501, 601, 625, 1011, Virgina Ave SE, M St SE, 2nd St SE, 7th St SE and all streets in between. Who remembers the "Center" RIP to REDD'S, he's from "Cappers"!
Michael Graham '84 Georgetown Hoyas "Cappers"

Hey Michael, we used to get our hair cut over at Fullers barbershop. Me myself, I started going there when I was 13, which was in 1980. At $4.00, he was the cheapest barber in town, although later he went up to $5.00. By the way, speaking of Redds, he was one of my favorite bands back in the day!

Does anyone remember the Show with Class Band, Ayre Rayde, E.U., Chuck and then Essence at the Coliseum with two stages? When everybody thought Jungle Boogie still played with Ayre Rayde and Ayre Rayde started out with the Jungle Boogie theme, then Eddie came across the mic with "That's Not Jungle Boogie, that's LOVE BOAT, DO IT!!! That night every band pushed it to the limit and cranked so hard, Essence had to dig down deep and take it up another level and showed why they were the best. It was either a 1984 Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years Show.

How many people agree that during the summer of 84', Ayre Rayde had Essence?

We vaguely remember that Coliseum show, so we can't comment on it. We can understand if you or anyone else feels Ayre Rayde was out cranking Essence, if not in the summer of 1984, then at some point in time.

Also I tried to find the video with Chuck Brown and the Soul Searches when they were on Soul Train playing Blow Your Whistle.

You're going waaay back! If anyone has any information on these bands, please send it to us, so that we can post it to the site. We will see if we can locate Chuck on Soul Train playing Blow Your whistle.

Sherman, those are some great memories. I just heard that Boolah the guitar player for Ayre Rayde passed away a little while ago.

Is this true? We hope it isn't, but if anyone knows anything about this, please send us an update!

I had to do some digging but it's true about "Boolah". Clarence "Boolah" Roper played in quite a few bands, including a P-Funk Tribute Band called The Clones of Funk. Last year, they did a show at the Cardinal's Nest and the members of the band did a tribute to "Boolah" including a rendition of the Ayre Rayde groove Special Hello.

We used to debate this all the time back in the day, but IMHO Boolah was better guitar player than Rare Essence's Whiteboy.

RIP Big Brother...
Big Will

Hey Big Will, thanks so much for helping us out with that research, we don't know if we would've had the time to dig up the information, which you did. By the way, giving Boolah the thumbs up over Whiteboy takes a lot of guts, and we won't say that you're wrong, but many will disagree with you. Hearing Boolah funk it up at many shows and on many tapes, we can see how your opinion was developed.

They may call Go Go, Jungle Music. But Go Go is alright with me. You go to NYC - rap. You go to LA -rap. You go to New Orleans - rap. You go to San Francisco - rap. Everytown in the U.S.A., including Canada, England, France and other contries - rap. To me "rap is crap". But Go Go is where its at. Only in the U.S. capital city, you get Go Go. That unique blend of Funk music that's in a class by itself. Those cities don't know nothing, but DC is where its at. Go Go is what you need, to get through the day. Go Go is good to go, all of the way. Never stop playing the "goo goose goose" or as some may call it, "grusome goose". It jams, it rocks, it cranks, it pops. Keep on doing what you do. Because as Chuck Brown say, "Don't mean a thing if it ain't got the go go swing." Stop playing the "crappy rap" and play the Go Go, that is where its at.
With much love R.C.

Thanks R.C.!!! As always, you keep it original and interesting.

Thanks Again For Your Support R.C.!

Maaaaan I really respect this website very very much! But I did not know that people were listening to songs kind of like empty lyrics. They don't sing in the songs... just talk a little bit every 10th seconds. What's the genre?

Thanks for the compliment!!! This genre of music is called GoGo, the native music of Washington DC! It's been around since the late 70's!

In the words of the Nutty Professor's mom: "Sherman! Sherman! Sherman! Sherman! Sherman!" "You go boy." Old School Go Go is "all that, and then some!!" I can groove, "whether work, whether play. "Play that funky goo goose goose, black boy." Many, many thanks for the memories. R.C.

A Poem by R.C.:

I play my "goo goose goose" on the bus And people look at me like I'm crazy

And still, I groove

Some folks whisper about me As I be jamming on the bus

And yet, I still groove

The bus driver asked me to turn my mp3 player down, I change my earphones

And still, I groove

The folks don't like to sit next to me On the bus while I jam

And yet, I still groove

Only my co-workers in the mail room And one in my department understand my grooving

With their encouragement I still groove

I still groove...I still groove...I still groove

Thanks for all the props as well as the Poem R.C.!!! We're going to keep this alive as long as we are alive, and hopefully some of the younger generation will take over where we leave off!

Hey Old School Go Go, I got to tell you this story. Back in the late 80's, my dad use to listen to Opera and Classical Music. He had this tape called, "Madam Butterfly" or something like that. Anyway, whenever I wanted to visit one of my girlfriends who live across town, I would ask to use his car. However, when I used his car, he had a tape deck in it. I used to have Trouble Funk - Saturday Night Live from Washington DC. One day, I used his car and was playing Trouble Funk, grooving, of course. Once I completed my journey, I took what I thought was my Trouble Funk tape out of the car, went inside the house and put it in my cassette walkman. Needless to say, it was my father's "Madam Butterfly" Opera tape.

So the next morning I caught the Metro Rail to work and pulled out my cassette walkman, with my father's tape in it, thinking it was my Trouble Funk tape. I was really taken by surprise, to hear this opera music. I was like, "What in the world is this?" Then in dawn on me that it was my father's opera tape, and he may have still had my Trouble Funk tape. Anyway, once I got to work the phone rang and my boss answered it. It was my father!! He was mad, because he wanted to listen to his "Madam Butterfly" tape, and I had it. He had the "Jungle Music" (as he called my Trouble Funk, Go Go Tape), instead. Anyway, I was on the phone explaining what had happened with the fact that I accidentally took his opera tape and he took the Go Go tape. Anyway, latter that night I gave him back his tape, and he gave me back mine.

I few months ago, I was in the hospital because I had my appendix removed. I was talking to him on my cell phone about the incident, and we laughed about it. This was a very funny incident between a father and son.
Thanks,
R.C.

Hey R.C., that's a good story. I remember how much my mother and my sisters hated GoGo, they also called it Jungle Music.

I work in Silver Spring and live near Columbia, MD. I take the commuter bus to and from work. A lot of white folks take the bus. I've loaded the Essence, Junk Yard, Peace Makers, and Hot Cold Sweat that I got from you'll, along with other go go cds and itunes I had and loaded on my MP3 player. When I ride the bus, I play my go go through my MP3 player and be grooving!! Those white folks on the bus be looking at me as if I am crazy - I don't care. I still groove, notwithstanding!!

I am very happy when I hear, talk about, or see things pertaining to go go music. It always takes me back when I was in my teens and early 20's. There is nothing like go go music. You have to be one who grew in the DC area to understand it. Old School Go Go is the only good Go Go in my opinion!!.

One more story, then I will leave you alone:

Back in the day one of my boys who really love Go Go, had a whole box of Go Go tapes he collected over the years. He played some Essence that I never heard. Nevertheless, it "cranked hard"!! As a matter of fact, it is the same Essence that I ordered from you'll back in October '09. My boy played it, and I heard the guitar solo at the end of "Up against the Wall", and was tripping on how it was such a "bad, funky sound". After that, whenever I saw my boy who had the Essence tape, we would trip over the funky guitar solo of the Up against the wall - song.

Thanks again,
Sincerely,
R.C.

What's up R.C.? Thanks again for posting the good memories of the GoGo past. We apologize for taking this long to post it, as we have been busy buiding a new section for our audience.

Man I am feeling this site, because I am a old head who can't get that beat out of my system, the stories and places you hit, wow, well let me add a few, the Club Labaron, the old Colony Theather uptown, The famous Ballroom in B-more, but it only lasted a minute. lol I would even go as far as this. I was in the Navy living in Japan, and all I talked about was go go and of course I had all my tapes, so all the bama's from NYC, Philly and other places had to listen to my go go so much that they started to like it. lol Trouble & Chuck came to Tokyo and DC represented big time!! And when they knew DC was in the house they cranked like S#it, lol. This is your man DC, and I love this site!!! What happened to our city, because no matter who came to DC we would let them know that they are alright, but give us some Funk, Benny, or Chuck, or just that beat and we would make an artist feel so uncomfortable, because we needed that beat!!!!! Be Good!!

What's up DC? I wish I could have made it to the Club Lebaron, but it shut down in 81. Although I was already going to GoGo's then, I was only 14, and it was hard to get to Landover from Oxon Hill back then, unless you wanted to spend the night out there until the P12 started running the next morning. Love the stories, and thanks for sharing them.

Hey Old School GoGo,
I use to live in NorthEast near H.D. Woodson, about a block away from 58th street. I went to Woodson. To go to school I had to walk across this walk bridge that was over this creek in my neighborhood. Right across the creek was a park with a bike trail and some businesses that were adjacent to Dix Street. The most noted business was Campbell's Barbershop. One time back in the early 80's Campbell's Barbershop hosted a Go Go event. I think Chuck Brown was there (back at that time I was not into Go Go that much).

Nevertheless, I went down the street from were I lived to visit one of my boys who lived near the creek. We could hear the Go Go Bands playing near Campbell's Barbershop, so we decided to walk close to the walk bridge over the creek. There was a huge crowd on the walk bridge where it would had been very difficult to cross. A lot of the folks on the walk bridge were smoking cigarettes and "ciger-weed". However we observed that on the other side of the creek in the park was a giant cloud of smoke underneath a tree. It turned out to be reefer smoke (because you can smell it - it was very loud)!!

About a week or so later, my boy and I walked across the creek on the walk bridge and he pointed out the tree of which the reefer smoke as under. That tree died!! It's bark was flaking off, and most of it's leave fell off, and it was still summer!! That reefer smoke those people were smoking killed the poor tree. If you go down to Dix Street and 57th Street that tree's skeleton may still be there.
Sincerely, R.C.

What's Up R.C.? Great story, I lived over in the Townhomes by Mayfair Mansion for 6 years, so I know where you're talking about. Remember when Lincoln Theater had the all night movies? I remember going to see Scar Face and a few other movies, and it was so packed, we had to sit on the floor until early in the morning when a few people finally decided to leave.

Oh my goodness. This is Gettie Boo from back in the day (85-92) This website brings back so many memories, from walking from Portabello in Oxon Hill with my girl Dynamite Debra to Cheriys where the gogo's would last till 5am and from there going to the IHOP. I remember how Hot Cheriy's would be. We used to check out RE on Sundays at the RSVP, (remember everyone trying to get a spot at the balcony on the top floor) then Wednesdays to see RE at the Chapter III, hearing Funk tear it up on the mic, Thursdays was the Metro Club, Friday was Crystal Skate, and Saturdays was the Black Hole, and don't forget about Wilmer's Park on Sunday afternoon. Now those were the good ole days! I remember how Mike Muse would sing 'Is it gettin to hot, to cold, ICE' then he would break it down with a slow groove! I remember Sugar Bear from EU hollering out 'Shake it like a white girl, shake it, shake it', thinking back to Rock Steady on the congo's, to Too Fly Ty from the Md side when he was rapping for Hot Cold Sweat and Ayre Rayde! This site is nothing but the truth, brings back all those good ole days. Good website Sherman, you still look the same from back in the day, keep up the good work!

Hey Gettie Boo, it's good to hear from you. I see ya'll was partying like we were. That walk from Portabello to Cheriy's was a nice little walk, but I know ya'll was tripping on the way, which made it fun. Tell everyone about the site!

What's up Gary? Man it's good to hear from you, it's been about 20 years or something. I'm glad you found the site. Man, did we used to party back in the day! I miss those days, I'm so glad we got the memories. I've gotten back in touch with Jeff and a whole lot of other cats because of this site, as a matter of fact, Shane sent a comment last year, which you can find somewhere on this page. Speaking of Richmond, I stop through there about once a month to get those Krispy Kreme doughnuts on Broad St., when going to visit my parents who moved back to NC. Be safe Gary, and hold on to those incredible memories. By the way, you just sent a shot out to all of Southview.

Wowwwww!!!!!! I am in Shock n Awe about this site. I was just looking for "Shady Groove Band" and I Googled it, and of course a lot of stuff came up. I was like let me just hit this site and see what happens. I am GLADDDDDDD!!!!!!! I did. Some people say they are Go-GO heads, well I am a Go-Go ADDICT, I mean I sleep, eat and drink Go-Go. I was like HELLLLL yea, this is what I am talking about. My name is CHRIS and I grew up around 14th st. NW uptown, and I still live UPTOWN. I went to NEW MEXICO to visit a female friend of mine and she loved OUR HOME GROWN MUSIC. I called a couple of friends of mine back in DC and told them where I was and they said wow, you all the way out there. Then they said something VERY STUPID.....Dogg you can't listen to no more go-go until you come back lol lol.... I said you MUST be CRAZY.......I don't care if I was on the moon I will ALLWAYS have a go-go cd with me, I don't care if it's one, and I have to listen to it everyday. I goes no where with out go-go music. I might not agree with how certain bands sound these days, but go-go is always by my side and in my heart and in my life. I even told my 16 year old daughter, don't be surprised if you see daddy in the go-go. I am only 38 but I look like I am 25, so I can get away with it lol lol. I will continue to go to the club or go-go when I am 99 lol lol. I don't care. I am not gonna say keep up the good work. I am gonna say YOU BETTER KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AND THIS IS A VERY VERY WELL DONE WEBSITE. I will be ordering from you real soon. Peace and don't ever leave my life OldSchoolGoGo.com. Thank you

Thanks Chris! We can relate to GoGo being in the blood forever. We don't care where you are or what you're doing, if you grew up on the 80's GoGo, it will live with you forever. It might slip your mind for a minute, but as soon as you hear it again, it takes to right back to where you were when you first heard it! By the way, I used to live up on 14th and Quincy in the late 60's, man how time flew!

This is Rick from uptown, this site is a jewel, as a long time GoGo appreciator, this is a real change... I wish the youngins would listen to those "pocket" beats and learn a little something....I'm an old Northwest Gardens character, when Essence would come out in the Red and White and tear the joint down...In August I went to the Funk and Lil Benny tribute, and it was like that...where can you find out where Proper Utencils is playing now? And can you get a copy of that event at Lafontaine Bleu...it was August 29, 2009 to be exact...they hit Mission Impossible and beat that thing down...'

The best place to find out where any of the bands are playing, is on FaceBook! We will try to get our hands on a copy of the Lafontaine Bleu show, and we'll send out an update once we have it. Enter your e-mail address at the top right of this page to get updates!

What ever happened to Brian of Epitome & Hot Cold Sweat? He was the tightest lead talker to me, I think he is underrated, but epitome band use to crank.

Yeah Brian was a beast! One of my boys used to manage Epitome, and I remember one time we were down in Culpepper VA at Jimmy's Lounge. The place was pretty empty, so to get the few girls who were there on the dance floor, Brian walked out to every corner of the dance floor while continuing to rap, pulling the girls on the dance floor. That's when I knew he was a unique GoGo rapper.

What`s up GoGo family? Hey Smitty, I remember that night Jungle Boogie cut his hand, blood was on the congo`s and Jungle was still givin` up the funk. I don`t know if this will ever happen, but there should have been a GoGo awards: Best MC, Best drummer, Best horn section, Best Congo player, Best lead guitar player, Best Bass player, Best KeyBoard Player, Best Rolla Tond player, and let all the best players play. Now that would have been something to hear and see. I enjoyed all the bands and it would have been very hard to pick just a set of band members. Take care GOGO FAMILY.
DJSLICE

Hey DJ Slice, thanks for story about Jungle Boogie. Although there have been GoGo awards for a few years now, we're not sure those categories were included. If they weren't, you're right, they should be added, and then the winners should be allowed to play. That would be mean!!! Thank You For Your Comment & Your Support DJ Slice!!!

Thanks for the old school go go. I ordered 5 cds from your website. I was very displeased with the Go Go Live at the Capital Center 1987 CD, because you took out Little Benny and some Chuck Brown tracks. How can you have Go Go Live without Little Benny?! Notwithstanding, the Mighty Peacemakers (way, old school), Rare Essence Live at the Coliseum, Junkyard, and Hot Cold Sweat were kickin'!

I take the commuter bus from home to work every day. And when I take it, I play my MP3 player that I loaded those go go cds. I be groving and some of the people on the bus be looking at me like I'm crazy. They just don't know, about old school go go, and how it can make you want to grove sometimes. Again, thanks for the go go. Because when I get a taste for it either at home or work, I can always play it on my computer (even while I work) and on my mp3.
roallenc

Thanks for the comment! We apologize for leaving Benny off the GoGo Live CD, but we didn't have enough space to get everyone on one CD. Since Benny was cut short on the video, only hittin Cat In The Hat, we opted to leave it out. We didn't feel it was worth creating a Double CD just to add that one track, especially since there are so many other Benny CD's you can order, which do Benny so much more justice. Thank You Again For Your Comment & Your Support!!!

This site brings back memories. I was 13 years old in 87' and I can't believe it now, that my moms dropped me and a friend off at the Cap Centre for Go-Go Live I. It was the greatest Go-Go I have ever seen, if you think I'm lying check out the video. Thank you for keeping Old School Go-Go alive. Much Love!
Big Rick

Hey Rick, you're right! GoGo Live 1 was one of the Greatest, if not the Greatest GoGo ever. Who else could pack the Cap Center like that, except for the likes of Rick James, Prince, The Isley Brothers etc. Unless GoGo has some incredible turn around, there will never be another GoGo like that one. Too bad the younger generation didn't have the opportunity to experience it! Thank You For Your Comment & Your Support Big Rick!!!

What's up all my GO-GO Lovers. I'm from Alexandria, VA and have been a go-go fan since 81 when Trouble Funk hit the scene. I remember all the go-go's with Chuck Brown, Rare Essence, EU and Ovation. We hung out at Crystal Skate, Cherries, Chapter 3, The Black Hole, and the Coliseum was the place to be. What's up 10 for 10 crew! Anacostia Park and all the cuties were at Haine's Point summer time 85-86. We walked all over Georgetown with our Hoya jackets on. There is NOTHING quite like go-go, the home grown beat and love from the crowd is something you understand and know or you don't. We would get crunk just from hearing Footz (RIP) warm up on the drums. Ya'll remember. "Do you know what time it is" and "Let me clear my throat" doing all the dances the wop, the happy feet! Go-go will live on forever, I reside in Atlanta now but PLEASE know I represent DC MD VA to the fullest when the go-go is on. Love ya all from the Highway....VA, Seat Pleasant, Fairfax, Landover, Suitland, Oxon Hill, it was all good in the hood.

GO GO girl for LIFE!! Representing to the fullest.

It's sounds like you and your crew got around the city too. We were all so proud of DC and our music back then. Thank You For Your Comment & Your Support GoGo Girl!!!

Whats up GOGO family? I got a cool story to tell. This takes place around the time of those cool Block parties in NE. Every so often, on any given street the ANC committee would sponsor gogo's. The conditions were, you need a House who would let you run the power cord to the band. Well, to my surprise, my dad let PM (Peace Makers) run the power from our house, and man let me tell you, being 12 and everybody know PM hooked into your house, listen I was the hit of the school for like a week. I told everybody that we managed the band (pressed for gogo rep), and who would challenge it. All my classmates saw the cord coming from my house then it happened. Guess what? Bink who played in the band, pointed to me and on the Mike said "Right on for shorty for giving us the power yall". I was on cloud nine, that was big as hell then to get a shout from any band. So they hit head shoulders knees and toes, and no fights, and everybody went home safe. I love that story peace from Smitty!!!!

Hey Smitty, thanks for the story! We can imagine how you felt, cause at that time, the bands were like superstars. Everybody wanted to know someone in one of the well known bands. Thanks Again For Your Support Smitty!!!

Whats up GoGo family? Whats up Sherm? It's Smitty. I just want to take a moment and see if I had a chance to put together a band of all-stars from past or present, how would I come out. Ok, here we go. I would put Little Daryl from Chance on the drums, his rolls where clean and he was not a real busy drummer, you know playin over everybody. On keys, slim from class I think his name was Moe, he used a lot of cool sounds, but I would have to also go with Godfather for technique. On congos my man from Reality, Walker Redds or Skintight. They both had unique beats. Front line, Cassanova Kevin from Pump Blenders, and that tall cat from Chance with the philly. Benny on horn DC on Sax, timbolly Dave on timms. Reo on the PA boards, White boy on guitar, Ayre Rayde's Bass player and Gregg Cooper doing Stand up - Wow!! The new bands mix it up, I wish Our old ones would come back and do that. I know some people make appearences but I mean an entire band, they all had so much to offer GoGo, and they all love the same thing, so why not!!! Anyway this is my pretend band I guess you could say. Peace!

Hey Smitty, that's a pretty creative line up! We know it would work, but you know everyone has their own All Stars, to include myself. I'm going to stay neutral on this subject, but invite anyone else to create their own fantasy band. Thanks For The Subject, & Your Support Smitty!!!

I'm lovin' this site! I'm lovin' all the memories! Wow!!! Like e'rybody else a flood of memories came back...Nobody mentioned Heavy Connection!...Trouble Funk's kick-off band at places like the Club LeBaron. The line-up was Ju-Ju (yeah that Ju-Ju) kickin' the drums, Leno on guitar, David on the Bass, TSE on timbales/roto-toms, Rosce on the congas, Cool Lou on the 'Bone, Lonnell on the Trumpet, Artie on the keys and some dude on the sax that came in after TF "promoted" HC's sax player...Played Glenarden Rec, NW Gardens & Riggs Bolling Alley with RE, with EU at Club LeBaron. (That was straight Drama. LOL. Remember when Bands used to fight other bands?) Maybe that's too far back for most folks on this site. Been around the world and everywhere I went I always had some Go-Go. Tryin' to spread it like the Gospel since '80...Keep doin' what'cha doin'!

Hey, it sounds like you might have been a member of Heavy Connection! In any case, thanks so much for the line-up, as well as some of the venues where they played. You have officially put them all on display! By the way, we remember the days of the beefing between the bands, not so sure it has changed that much. Thank You For Your Comment & Your Support!

Awww shucks y'all! I just came across this site from a Facebook link. To say the least, this site is "bumpin y'all"

It's hard to express to people my enthusiasm, what I experienced and how that "pocket beat" and the whole culture that we grew up makes me feel - especially coming from a 43 year old professional white guy! I grew up in SE near Eastern Market. I remember seeing Ayre Rayde and Essence at the Black Hole. Chuck at the Masonic Temple. My dad had no idea!

One night at the Black Hole, I brought a small tape recorder. After the show a crowd formed and headed to an alley to watch a fight (must have been 30-40 of us kids). When we got to the alley I pressed record. Words were being exchanged, a lot of "woofin" & "jonin". Then this kid pulls a gun and starts shooting. Meanwhile tape is still going. It was priceless! Over the years I lost the tape.

I moved to NYC, met David Rubin at an Ayre Rayde show in NYC. I was seriously considering promoting Go-Go in NY. Didn't happen. Go-Go is truly a DMV thing.

Over the years I've seen Chuck Brown in NY and Cleveland. Trouble Funk also in NY. The Lord has blessed me with a Puerto Rican wife from NYC, who agrees - "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that go-go swing" - a white girl would just never understand .. LOL

Thanks Sherman .. good lookin' out!

Go-Go Bill from Capital Hill "came to boogie"

What's Up GoGo Bill from Capital Hill? It never ceases to amaze us, the different races of people whom GoGo touches, and the different parts of the world in which they now reside! Speaking of Capital Hill, you have to remember the Capital Hill movie theater. I think we used to pay something like 2 bucks to see a movie, which was a bargain. We also can't forget about Fullers Barbor Shop which was right by the Navy Yard, only 4 bucks for a haircut, when everywhere else was 6 to 8 bucks! Thanks For Sharing The Memories, & Thank You For Your Support GoGo Bill!

Hey OSGOGO, this really brings back so many good memories. I may not be as wise in age as some of you leaving comments, but we have a fair share of stories as well. I remember us going to Wilmer's Park, Oxon Hill Fire House, The Annex, Ice Box you name it we were there. Seeing Big Butch holding down the fort while Exclusive Band and Show Show Show (that was suppose to be an echo) would open up for NEG or JYB. I remember going to a GoGo and young ladies were FREE all night and fellas paid $5, and when it went up to $5 for young ladies and $8-10 for the young fellas.

I also remember my girlfriends father dropping us off and we would ask him to drop us off down the street and we would walk, faking like we drove or caught the bus when we knew for real. I remember when you could go to a Band and Show and yeah you repped where you were from and may exchange some words but no fighting really took place. Or at least at some spots. Sometimes I just wonder, like why we can't ALL party together and have a good time?!?!?!?

I looked at some throwback pic's from GoGo's we went to and I have showed my daughter and she thought we looked a HOT SWEATY MESS, but we thought we were the **** back then. Some of the things we wore. LOL I rememebr going to PA palace to get ALL my GoGo tapes, or on Sat. and Sun morning getting up and watching GoGo's on TV (don't remember the channel) and when we would see ourselves, we really thought we were doing something. GoGo's are still good depending on where you go, but ain't nothing like a good ole Chuck Brown and EU show.

Much Love,
Sweet Mek (ole school gogo name) Those were the days!

What's Up Sweet Mek? Love the stories! We can see you did your share of partying at the GoGo's too! Thank You For Your Comment & Your Support Sweet Mek!

Whats up yall? I have a burning question everybody wants to know. Tapes are classic yes, and hard to find, let's face it, some shows are 30yrs old now, but does anyone out there have videos of early 80's stuff? I know a lot of people did not have those big old camcorders, but a few people had that kind of money. I'm just curious, because I would love to see footage of AYRE RAYDE or MASS or PEACE MAKERS or REALITY at some block party, that would be nice.
Peace your gogo man Smitty cbs3158a@yahoo.com

Good question Smitty! We'll be contacting you very soon! Thanks Again For Your Comment & Your Support Smitty!

Whats up yall? I have a straight classic that I have not heard anyone with. It's RE from Fort Dupont. I know they played many times there, but this one was unique. Godfather couldn't get off work according to Funk, Jungle boogie cut his hand, so Dave stood in, and Benny was the only horn. Funk said "We gonna play what we can yall" and they mashed it! They did Real Mccoy, These are the Breaks (Curtis Blow) and Wack Attack, Wow, that proves RE was a complete band, without everyone even being there. My specialty are the tapes no one has, like block parties and Jr High Schools. If you need any odd location tapes, let me know, I am the guy who would have a tape at the back window of the Howard if I had to.
Peace from Smitty

Whats up everybody? First off this site is the bomb! I would like to talk about effects and sound for a moment. AYRE RAYDE needs to get credit for their sound man, because he had them projecting and sounding so good. I have seen almost every band, big and small. I grew up around the Maverick room, and although RE had the sockets, AR had the power, remember gogo Timmy, WOW! They would put the echo on him and he would sound like 6 people. Chance and Fox are another well produced sound for the time. Think who had the clearest tapes, even with the poor recorders back then, AYRE RAYDE! Peace to Eddy and DOC!

You're right, Ayre Rayde did have a nice clean sound, and it's reflected in the old P.A. tapes that still exist today, although now they've been transferred to CD. Some of these CD's can rival today's sound. Thanks For Your Comment & Your Support!

I went to the skating rink in MD. too, I just wish E.U. would have came to the Alexandria skating rink. If u cannot feel GOGO then I just don't know what to tell u. Not one time did you mention the Black Hole, man come on, where is go-go with no Black Hole, you guys have to remember the Black had three different names man!!! The Black Hole,The Celebrity Hall and the Capitol City Pavilion how dare you forget about the hotdoggs and soda at the Black. You have to remember, it wasn't a club it was like a big hallway were you could see one band on one end turn around and see another band on the other end. Man bands use to CRANK in that joint!!!!!!! This is CEES from dat 3500 14th st. Born and raised uptown.

Hey go-go people I was in Columbia Maryland. What about CC Groove, that is Columbia City Groove and what about Currency Band, my man Reno on the lead mic and my man Jon-Jon on the congos. Lets show the whole DMV some love. They played at Howard Community College and the Other Barn and the Stone House. What about Annapolis, Hot Cold Sweat and Ayre Rayde use to play out there all the time. It's all good though go-go is so much NOBODY can name every band or every spot. I love GO-GO, I eat drink and sleep this stuff. Cees 35double 0 14th. St.

What's Up CEES? You're right, we didn't mention the Black Hole, but we did mention Celebrity Hall, which we felt says it all for that spot. It's how we remember it, we weren't too crazy about the name changes, especially the Capital City Pavilion which almost everyone forgot about. Most people will remember it as the Black Hole, but it will always be Celebrity Hall to us. By the way thanks for reminding us of that Columbia crew. Everybody from Columbia, Ft. Meade & that Annapolis area have been Officially Put On DISPLAY!!!

This is A-Money from St. Mary's County, MD. We down here in the country as people up in D.C. and PG would call it, are very big gogo fans. Probably more than alot of you guys up there. Yeah I remember coming up there to alot of those spots and partying. But a lot of the bands used to come down to our skating rink and perform. I love this site and just wanted everyone to know that ST. MARY'S IS ON THE MAP. GOGO LIVES FOREVER.

What's Up A-Money? It's good to hear from St. Mary's! We used to hear about GoGo's down there, but unfortunately we never got a chance to make it to any of them. Although it was a little ride to get to St. Mary's, it was nothing compared to going to King George and Colonial Beach VA, which is where we would go to support Physical Wundor many times. St. Mary's County has officially been put on DISPLAY!!!

What's Up! This is "Master Ron" old bass guitar player for: Prophecy Band and Class Band! Good to know that the history of Go-Go is not just a memory, but a legacy that is Still Here and Crankin! Gospel Artist Ron- love ya'll!

Hey Ron, it's good to hear from old band members! You must have played the bass for Prophecy before Michelle. My boy Mike played bass for them the last 4 to 5 years before they decided to break up. Sometimes you don't appreciate what you've got until it's gone!!!

Man this site is what a brother needs! The stuff they be playing now, and they call it go-go, come on, they can't even make the walls sweat like R.E. at the Panorama Room, E.U. straight turning Anacostia Park into a Beatles like concert, and them Boys Trouble Funk dropping them Bombs Way before the troops hit IRAQ, u feel me! If anyone can get me some info on the names of Hot Cold Sweat Band members, and anyone have any Mighty Groovers tapes holla at ur boy! Sta2nlsn@yahoo.com - Aka gogo Stimey

Hey Stimey, your comments are well taken and hold true for many of us Old School GoGo fans. Speaking of E.U. down Anacostia Park, man was that the shxt, and you're right it was like a Beatles concert! It used to be packed out there and smoking hot, but we didn't care, we sweated extra hard, first from the sun and then boogying like there was some A/C out there. What memories!

This is John Jones, AKA, Bighorn from the original RE. I think this a great site and would like to give you some insight as to the origin of RE and some unknown history facts. Let me know where I can contact you to give you some additional information. In the meantime, keep up the good work and keep GO-GO alive.

Hey, what's up Big Horn? I remember watching you way back in the day, when Essence was straight FUNKY! If I'm not mistaking, the last time I saw you play was at the Hyatt Regency for the R.E. reunion back in 1990. You can hit me up at info@oldschoolgogo.com. I'll be looking out for your e-mail.

This site is something special! For those of us 40 somethings that grew up with the original go-go bands this takes you back to the days of groovin' all night when the price was right!!! I remember going to HD Woodson to see Trouble, EU and Rare Essence play all night for $1.00 in 1980. Hard to believe now, but it's true and we partied our asses off. My, how times have changed. Keep the memories alive with this website because they are too good to forget!!!

You taking us way back. 1980 is around the time I went to my 1st gogo, those were the days!

Hey this is Tee from the Highway, VA. This site is really nice. Love the Slow Jams and the old school GoGo. Went to West Potomac H.S. I remember Shady Groove playing there back in the day. I love listening to GoGo but have not been to very many, I used to go to Alexandria Skating Rink and listen too. I listen to this site all day long at work. Thanks again and keep up the good work.........

Thanks for those memories Tee! We went to Alexandria Skating rink a few times, and just loved the old feel of it.

Sherman,
My name is Jamaal. I'm from Annapolis. Man, in the early 80's we would get our "groove" from Go-Go Albums. Aghh, I used to go all the way to Landover Mall to get TTED/DETT albums. Who remembers the name of that record store on the top floor of Landover?

But, the best is when someone from Annapolis had a relative from DC and got a tape. We used to go tape recorder to tape recorder, and had to be quiet so no other noise would interrupt the recording. Then they came out with the High Speed Dubbers (LOL)

People from DC would always say that Essence was the best. But man......nothing could compare to the sounds Trouble Funk put down on album. EU had it on lock down in mid-80's. Most underrated, Prophecy Band & Show. Everybody knows Mickey and Jungle but Howdy Doody had the best pocket beats. And I read an earlier comment about EU not having a pocket. Must have been strung out back then on that Luv Boat because, Foxy Brown had EU rolling!!

How many remember Super Skate in Annapolis!! I know anyone from Largo does because they used to always come to A-town and try to chump us. Fights would break out with the Largo Hustlers all the time. Boy, so many of us were young and dumb back then.

This is the best go-go site I've come across. Very tight! Man, we need to chip in and give everyone involved with this site an award or something!!!

Hey Jamaal, we used to record from tape recorder to tape recorder too, we would get the worst copies that way. We agree that Trouble couldn't be touched when it came to the albums, and you're right on point about Prophecy being underated. I used to roll with them deep out into VA all the time, but if they would have played local more often, people would have seen how vicious they were. By the way we had heard of Super Skate, but never went. We did hit some spot off of Riva Rd around 1986 or 1987, and we ended up gettin in a fight - It was a mess!

Man....I can remember the Paragon like it was yesterday....always parking around the corner from the club. Security was tight up in there. I can even recall seeing IceBurg Slim playing at (now get this) Haines Point. Holla if u heard me! These young folks paying half a ball to see bands is crazy....Like you said we could see 5 or 6 bands for 5 or 10 bucks.

Yeah, the Paragon was the spot, and it was clean!

I was born into go-go! Born in Sheridan Terrace I was christianed on the good JYB, loved it ever since! Still cranks with them. When they shut down the Terrace we moved to Minnesota Ave, "Mario's" best pizza and steak and cheese on the southside....as I grew older I fell in love with RE and NEG! I love go-go to the heart and I'm glad to see that it's growing. Go-Go is the foundation to a lot of music today such as Jill Scott, Kelly Rowland, Amerie, etc. When I saw RE on the MTV Awards with Ludacris, it was the proudest day for me, cause that's when I knew go-go was on its way, and FINALLY the rest of the country can see that special thing about DC! I remember the IBEX....WHOOOOO....I can still hear Buggs sayin, "party on the balcony" lets not forget the Taj Mahal, Bumpers, Icebox, Sugar Cane Palace....I remember the Battle of the Bands at RFK and the Armory! Back in the day, Malcolm X Day down Anacostia Park and the Unifest was live!

Now I'm older and I agree with the young lady, Lissen did crank up Dinosaurs! I rocks with Familiar Faces and JY still be crankin! Can't forget the Wickedest Band Alive, "RE" and Ra Ra came back with WHAT? Go-Go has always been and always will be a part of me!

Hey, thanks for all those memories! By the way, we used to hit that Mario's on Minn. & 25th St., and you're right the Steak & Cheese are the bomb!

I AM SOOOO GLAD I FOUND THIS SITE. My name is Sweets and to say the least I luuuuuuuuv my go-go. I grew up in the mid 70s to 80s (I won't say my age) and mainly in the church, but a close girlfriend of mine would take me to St. Mary's catholic school where some of the bands would play. We just didn't tell my mama where we were going. Oh, Sherman, remember being sooo close to the speakers at the go-go, when u and ur buddies left out, u couldn't hear anything? LOL. Now married and two kids later, I still love my go-go. When I and my husband go on long trips and I fall asleep, he finds some go-go on the radio and up I pop as if I never even fell asleep. LOL. We're headed over to WOW wings 2nite where there will be a reggae/go-go band to get our party on. Luv ur site. Keep it up.

Hey Sweets! Yeah I remember coming out of the GoGo not being able to hear a thing, until a day or two later. I later learned not to get so close to the speakers, or to put my fingers in my ears if I did.

Hello, this is "Doc" the original drummer of AYRE RAYDE, I think that this is one of the better sites that I have came across yet, I like how you are informing people that back in the day how it was fun, and maybe a fight or two between different crews, but not all this shooting was going on. I wish that a lot of our young brothers and sisters would read this site and get a better understanding of the D.M.V. music that we started. Just heard that Shady Groove was trying to get back together and Class is having their reunion on 6-13-09 at Mirrors. Keep up the good work brother. Love always Doc Go-GO 4 LIFE!!!!

What's up Doc! We're glad you enjoy the site. It's important for original band members and pioneers like yourself to endorse our site. It let's us know we have done a good job, while giving our site credibility. By the way, we used to love watching you stand up to play those drums. Thanks for the memories!

My name is Marc and I have worked as a keyboardist for several bands on the Go-Go scene, most recently Proper Utensils. I must tell you, the music has changed very much from when I first began performing. Just about every Go-Go venue that I performed at, has been closed down.. Cherry's, The Metro Club, The Ibex, The All Around Racer's Club, Wilmer's Park, Tripples Night Club, Evan's Grill, Club U, etc... WOW! Those were some good times! To all the orginal Go-Go Allstars, both still here and gone on to another life.. Much love and respect to you all... Thanks for allowing me to share the stage with you all!
Nothing But Love,

This is David F (Scratch) the first guitarist of Backyard 1984-1985, wazzup SuperCooper, Buggs, Bay Bay, Sauce, and forgive me for those to whom I did not mention. I'm 41 now and glad to see that a site like this has been put together so the new boots will know what a real pocket sounds like. I'm glad that someone held on to all of the treasures that we can still listen to. Man I was 13 all over again looking at some of those old clips. As it would have been said back in my day, this site is hit'n and stick'n like popeyes chickin : )

Back in the day when I was getting tapes, I just wanted to have more than everyone else, I never knew it would get to the point where they would become treasures. I wish I wouldn't of loaned out the hundreds that I never got back, especially the Redds & The Boys, and The Mass Extinction collection I gave up when I went to boot camp in 1985. I never got them back!

Why don't you make it so that we can pay a monthly subscription and be able to download directly from the site?

This was one of our original ideas, but it requires the end user to be somewhat savvy in downloading, otherwise we will have many unsuccessful downloads. We may still make it an option in the future, but it will take some time to incorporate.

Hey Sherman, it's your old classmate Adrienne (Lord Baltimore, Friendly High). You did the damn thing w/this website!!!! You shared things that either made me reminisce, or you shared things that I didn't even know occurred. I definitely enjoyed the feedback from everyone, as I can relate to some of their stories (standing in the long lines, the fights, no ins and outs?. Happy)

I always said that someone needed to do something like this as go-go (particularly old-school go-go) should have it's own genre, not falling within the categories of Rap/Hip-Hop/R&B. TMOTTGOGO deserves some recognition, as well!

I am a go-go fanatic myself just like you and many of the others, so you doing this is a seriously huge dedication and representation of what go-go fans have been wanting for a very long time!

There is one thing - (I don't think) there was any mention about JuJu House (E.U./Lil Benny & the Masters/Chuck Brown). His pockets were furious! They kept you on the dance floor. A living legend that still has the endurance that he had 20 plus years ago. Major shout-out to all the old go-go bands (RIPs and living) and of course you, Sherman, for making it do what it do!

Keep up the good work!!!! Well Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's up Adrienne? Thanks for all the props, it's really good to see old friends visiting the site! By the way, thanks for the heads up on JuJu, we have now added him to the site!
