J.J. helps a little girl, Penny, on the bus, and she follows him home. She makes up stories about her life, but leaves out the part about her abusive mother. She quickly wins over the Evans family and they even invite her to Michael's school carnival. But to their horror, they find her covered with bruises and burns and realize that Penny's mother may be responsible.
